Grandma’s Hands

Cotton, tobacco, sugarcane, rice

Hands pick, poked, bled 

Hands preparing, scrubbing, stirring,

kneading,

caressing,

holding,

splintered, callused-smooth

Hands combing, parting, braiding

Hands praying

praying

Hands praising, raised to glory

Patting softly, clapping loudly,

rejoicing!

Hands quiet, now, still.

Hands cradling

tomorrow.
